The shell of a Volkswagen Beetle perched atop six steel legs has held sentinel in the parking lot of The Mechanics automobile repair shop for over 3 decades.

The Mechanics owner, Tony Mangat, purchased it from an auto shop on Macleod Trail that was going out of business in 1986. Mangat moved the bug to his parking lot on the back of a flatbed truck. Maintenance over the years has included the occasional sand and paint job.

Mangat recently retired at the end of 2017, and has said the developer (Certus) who purchased the property will keep the icon alive.

Mangat originally had thoughts of bringing the Beetle back to where he lives in Priddis, but ultimately decided to leave it as a piece of art in the community on 14th street.

A Certus property manager has stated they will be placing the spider beetle on the roof of a building on 14th street, slightly north of the current location.

The Mechanics’ customers have many stories of their children playing punch buggy whenever they drove by the location, only to come back years later as adults in need of the business services provided by The Mechanics.
